Frankfurt, October 4, 2010
Around 200 researchers from around the world attended on September 28-30, 2010, the 3rd International Conference on Objects and Databases (ICOODB 2010), at the Campus West of the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
ICOODB 2010 was the third in a series of international
conferences aimed at promoting the exchange of information and
ideas between members of the objects and databases communities. A
key feature of the conference was its goal to bring together
developers, users and researchers.
Researchers at the conference and the exhibits area, engaged in
lively discussion on the needs for complex data management for
new database applications where large amount of data is
long-lived and of up most social and economic importance.
Web-based database applications were one of the main topic of the
conference.
Since the introduction of the Web in 1983, Web-based database
applications have became the norm. Examples of such new database
applications include Amazon for electronic commerce, Google for
searching the Web, Facebook for social networks, and Twitter for
posting mini blogs.
Researchers presented new software technologies and research
ideas supporting the design, construction, maintenance and
operation of such new Web-based applications.
The conference addressed another twenty-first century driver for
new database applications: namely mobile application systems. As
smart devices such as iPhones are becoming ubiquitous, they all
have complex database requirements - both for local (mobile)
databases and those associated with Web servers.
“This highlights the variations in scale that database systems
must address - from small databases to support personal data up
to large Web-based databases. We require appropriate software
technologies to address both these domains and all those in
between. This was exactly the main focus of the ICOODB 2010
conference”, said Prof. Roberto V. Zicari, General Chair of the conference.
The program consisted of 10 peer reviewed research papers, 10
industry presentations, 2 tutorials, 1 workshop, 3 keynotes and
1 keynote panel.
Among the keynote speakers:
Professor Ricardo Baeza-Yates, Vice President, Yahoo! Research,
for Europe and Latin America, presented the new software
developments of Yahoo! Research for advanced search of the
Web.
Professor Stefano Ceri, of Politenico di Milano, illustrated
Search Computing, a 4 years project for developing intelligent
search for the Web. The project is funded by the European
Research Council (ERC), as part of the "IDEAS Advanced Grants", a
program of the European Commission dedicated to the support of
investigation-driven frontier research.
Ulf Michael (Monty) Widenius, the main author of the open-source
MySQL database, presented MariaDB a new community-developed
branch of MySQL. MySQL is currently the world's most popular open
source database, with 33% market share in overall database usage
by developers,
ICOODB 2010 was organized by the team of Database and Information
Systems (DBIS) lead by Prof. Roberto V. Zicari at the Institute
of Informatics, Goethe University Frankfurt.
About ICOODB 2010
ICOODB 2010 was the third in a series of international
conferences aimed at promoting the exchange of information and
ideas between members of the objects and databases communities. A
key feature of the conference was its goal to bring together
developers, users and researchers. At the same time, the
conference aimed to meet the needs of the different
sub-communities. The conference therefore consisted of three
different tracks offered as a tutorial & workshop day, an
industry day and a research day.
ICOODB 2010 was organized by the group of Database and
Information Systems (DBIS) lead by Prof. Roberto V. Zicari at the
Institute of Informatics, Goethe University Frankfurt, with the
support of ODBMS.ORG, and sponsorships from Versant, InterSytems,
IBM, and sones. Media partners were Springer, Apress, CRC Press
Taylor and Francis Objekt Spektrum, Linux Magazine.
